Survey Overview

The Global School-based Student Health Survey (GSHS) in Cali City, Colombia, conducted in 2007, focused on health-risk behaviors among students aged 13-15 years (grades 7-10). It assessed alcohol and drug use, sexual behaviors, unintentional injuries and violence, dietary habits, physical activity, and tobacco use. The survey used a two-stage cluster sampling design with a sample of 1945 students from 828 schools, achieving school response rate of 90%, student response rate of 86%, and overall response rate of 77%. Data collection was through self-report methods.

Key Findings by Category

Alcohol and Other Drug Use: High prevalence, with 55.8% reporting alcohol consumption, 38.4% experiencing drunkenness, 18.0% facing negative consequences from drinking, and 17.8% using drugs at least once in life. Boys and girls showed variations, with males having higher overall rates.
Dietary Behaviours and Overweight: Low incidence of hunger (1.1% reporting it), indicating minimal food insecurity in the sample.
Physical Activity: Only 17.1% met the recommended daily physical activity of 60+ minutes across seven days, while 51.7% spent three or more hours per day in sedentary activities.
Sexual Behaviours: 33.2% reported ever having sexual intercourse; 21.0% with multiple partners in life. Among those who had sex, 60.0% used a condom the last time, suggesting consistent condom use is common.
Tobacco Use: Significant usage and exposure, with 20.5% smoking cigarettes, 9.4% using other tobacco products, and high exposure rates (70.9%) to smoking in presence.
Unintentional Injuries and Violence: High rates of violence, with 23.0% reporting physical attacks, 30.3% experiencing fights, 28.9% suffering serious injuries, and 29.0% being bullied within timeframes.
