Survey Overview
The Thailand Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) in 2005 assessed tobacco use among 13-15-year-olds using a school-based cluster sampling design. It involved 15,420 students with high response rates, examining prevalence and determinants like access, exposure to secondhand smoke (SHS), media, and school curriculum.
Key Findings
- Tobacco Use Prevalence: 26.7% of students ever smoked cigarettes; 15.7% currently used any tobacco product; 11.7% smoked cigarettes currently; 7.7% used other tobacco products currently.
- Demographics: Smoking rates are higher among boys compared to girls.
- SHS Exposure: About half (49.0%) live in homes where smoking occurs; 68.2% are exposed outside the home; over two-thirds have parents who smoke.
- Attitudes and Beliefs: 88.1% support smoking bans in public places; 68.6% believe SHS is harmful; most students want to stop smoking if they use it and tried other cessation methods.
- Access and Media: Many students easily obtain cigarettes; 68.1% of current smokers did not face age-related refusal; 91.9% were exposed to anti-smoking media.
- School Factors: 61.9% learned about smoking dangers in school; 30.7% discussed smoking reasons in class.
