Haiti GYTS Summary (Ages 13-15)
Survey Overview:
The Haiti Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) conducted in 2005 was a school-based study targeting students aged 13-15. It employed a two-stage cluster sampling design, with a response rate of 80.0% at the school level, 100.0% at the class level, and 49.7% at the student level, resulting in an overall response rate of 39.8% and 1,726 participants involved in comprehensive tobacco use assessments.
Key Findings:
- Tobacco Use Prevalence: Including data on ever smoked cigarettes (24.3%, with boys at 27.1% and girls at 21.6%), current use of any tobacco product (19.7%), current cigarette smoking (14.0%), and current use of other tobacco products (8.9%).
- Initiation and Cessation: 23.9% of never-smokers were likely to start smoking next year; 86.9% of current smokers desired to quit, and 73.3% had attempted cessation in the past year.
- Secondhand Smoke (SHS): High exposure was noted, with 26.5% living in homes where others smoked and 38.6% exposed to SHS outside home. Strong positive attitudes towards tobacco control, such as 88.8% believing SHS is harmful and 58.5% supporting bans in public places.
- Media and Influences: 55.2% were exposed to anti-smoking media messages, while pro-tobacco ads were common, with 10.8% seeing billboard ads and 54.1% advertising in print media. Only 36.7% received classroom education on smoking dangers.
- Access and Availability: 42.7% smoked at home, and 55.9% bought cigarettes without age refusal in stores. Among current smokers (66.4%, excluding youth under 13 not applicable here), cessation needs were high.
Additional Details:
The survey examined determinants like access, SHS exposure, media influences, and school curriculum engagement. Key contacts for further information are Dr. Gerald Lerebours. Overall, high tobacco use rates and supportive public opinion highlight the need for enhanced tobacco control programs in Haiti.
