Gartner®: The Future-Ready Supply Chain
Introduction
Chief Supply Chain Officers (CSCOs) face significant challenges in 2025 and beyond, including AI advancements, stricter ESG regulations, geopolitical shifts, data control, and talent shortages. To prepare for these, CSCOs should focus on five key supply chain characteristics: agility, resilience, strategic alignment, regionalization, and ecosystem collaboration. These traits are supported by intentional investments in technology, sustainability, talent, and the business model. Such investments impact customer satisfaction, revenue, OTIF performance, return on capital, and talent retention.
However, many CSCOs are distracted by urgent, short-term issues. Fewer than 20% of supply chain organizations fully integrate scenario planning into their strategy, and only about 30% of those have earned their CEO’s recognition for aligning supply chain strategy with overall business strategy.
This report outlines four distinct paths to long-term supply chain success: Design, Decision, Deferment, and Durability, along with decision criteria to help CSCOs choose the right path for their business.
