报告摘要
Summary of "How accurately do consumers report their debts in household surveys?"
Household financial surveys often suffer from measurement error due to rounding, misreporting, and cognitive biases. Using a unique matched dataset from Chile's Household Finance Survey (EFH) and banking records, the study finds significant discrepancies in debt reporting. Consumers underreport loan participation and amounts, especially for consumer loans, though delinquency status and loan maturities are accurately reported. Rounding errors explain a substantial portion of the discrepancies in debt amounts. Borrowers who are not the highest-income family members show higher discrepancies, possibly due to misreporting or confusion with others' debts. The study highlights the importance of matched administrative-survey data for accurate policy analysis and suggests improvements in survey design to reduce measurement error.
