Overview
The Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) conducted in the Czech Republic in 2002 was a school-based study involving 7th, 8th, and 9th graders (ages 13-15). The survey used a two-stage cluster sampling design, achieving a school response rate of 100.0%, class response rate of 99.0%, student response rate of 88.0%, and overall response rate of 87.1%. A total of 3,678 students participated.
Methodology
The survey collected data on tobacco use prevalence and various determinants, including access/availability, price, secondhand smoke (SHS) exposure, cessation, media, and school curriculum. All eligible students in selected classes could participate.
Prevalence of Tobacco Use
- 73.5% of students had ever smoked cigarettes, with boys (75.1%) exceeding girls (72.1%).
- 34.6% currently use any tobacco product, with boys (35.5%) slightly higher than girls (33.6%).
- 34.6% currently smoke cigarettes (34.0% for boys, 35.1% for girls).
- 8.5% use other tobacco products (higher among boys, 11.6%, vs. 5.3% for girls).
- Strong likelihood of smoking initiation: 24.0% of never smokers plan to start smoking next year.
Determinants of Tobacco Use
- Access and Availability: 49.2% buy cigarettes in stores; 72.1% of those buying were not refused due to age. A quarter have cigarette brand logos on personal objects.
- SHS Exposure: High exposure—41.1% live in homes where others smoke during their presence; 74.5% are exposed outside home. Among students, 68.0% indicate one or more parents smoke. Half believe SHS is harmful.
- Attitudes: 8.5% think smoking enhances friendliness (boys) or attractiveness (girls). Six in ten (60.3%) believe SHS is harmful. Strong support for public smoking bans: 74.5% favor banning smoking in public places.
- Cessation: 49.1% of current smokers want to stop; 69.0% have tried to quit in the past year; 50.5% have received help.
Media and Advertising
- Media exposure: 77.3% saw anti-smoking messages in the past 30 days; 86.0% saw pro-cigarette billboard ads, and 82.5% saw such ads in newspapers/magazines.
- Educational aspects: 64.6% learned about smoking dangers in class; 51.1% discussed reasons and effects of tobacco use.
Key Findings
Tobacco use is prevalent among youth, with high SHS exposure and strong influences from media and social factors. Initiatives for tobacco control include education and media campaigns, but challenges remain in enforcement and access.
