Global Youth Tobacco Survey PALAU 2013 Summary

Objective: The Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) is a standardized tool for monitoring tobacco use among youth aged 13-15 years, tracking key tobacco control indicators, and assisting countries in fulfilling obligations under the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC).

Methodology: GYTS employs a nationally representative school-based survey with a two-stage sampling design. In Palau for 2013, a census was conducted involving all students in grades 6-12, with 1574 students surveyed, 649 aged 13-15. Data collection uses a standardized core questionnaire administered via anonymous self-administered bubble sheets, covering topics such as tobacco use, cessation, secondhand smoke, access, media, and knowledge/attitudes.

Key Findings:

• Tobacco Use: 45.4% of students (54.1% boys, 36.7% girls) used any tobacco product. Specifically, 32.3% smoked cigarettes, with higher rates among boys, and 19.5% used smokeless tobacco.
• Cessation: Almost 80% of current smokers wanted to quit immediately.
• Secondhand Smoke: 44.7% of students were exposed to tobacco smoke at home.
• Access & Availability: 16% of cigarette smokers obtained them by buying, and 60.4% faced no age restrictions.
• Media & Products: One quarter (24.7%) of students owned items with tobacco brand logos, and low awareness exists regarding tobacco advertising.
• Knowledge & Attitudes: 76.8% of students believed tobacco smoking is harmful to others.
