Natural climate solutions like blue carbon ecosystems (BCEs) play a vital role in combating climate change and biodiversity loss. BCEs, including mangroves, tidal marshes, seagrass meadows, and open ocean ecosystems, demonstrate significant potential for carbon capture and storage, offering not only climate benefits but also biodiversity protection, coastal defense, and economic gains. Investing in BCEs is essential to meet global climate goals, as technological carbon removal alone may fall short.
BCEs act as efficient carbon sinks, storing carbon in biomass and sediments over long periods. The ocean holds extraordinary carbon storage capacity, with estimates suggesting it captures about 38% of human-caused emissions. Climate scenario planning indicates a need to remove up to 10 gigatons of carbon annually by 2050 and double that by 2100.
The science behind carbon capture in oceans includes two major mechanisms: the physical carbon pump, which transfers CO2 via ocean currents and dissolution into deep waters; and the biological carbon pump, driven by photosynthesis and oceanic food webs. Understanding processes like the "whale pump" and research into large-scale carbon sequestration, such as enhanced weathering or alkalinity enhancement, further support BCE implementation.
Different projects show varying maturity levels. Coastal wetland restoration (e.g., mangroves) has high readiness and co-benefits like storm protection and fisheries enhancement. Enhanced weathering and ocean alkalinity enhancement exhibit medium readiness, yet face scalability concerns. Ocean fertilization remains experimental with environmental uncertainties, while CO2 injection into the deep ocean is at early stages due to potential ecological risks.
To advance BCE adoption, integrating them into corporate and national climate strategies, utilizing voluntary carbon markets, and establishing standardized measurement tools are key. Governments should align NDCs with blue carbon, while businesses can leverage these ecosystems for meeting net-zero targets and nature-positive goals.
Globally, the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (2021–2030) presents a major opportunity to accelerate BCE growth. Collaboration among stakeholders, data-driven assessments, and private sector investment are crucial to unlocking funding and driving innovation.
