MDSC Meningitis Weekly Bulletin - Week 02, 2009

I. Epidemiological Situation Week 02 (05-11 January 2009)

• Burkina Faso reported 123 cases and 20 deaths (16.3% lethality) with alerts in Toma (attack rate 7.3) and Pama surpassing the epidemic threshold (attack rate 19.0).
• Cote d'Ivoire reported 13 cases and 4 deaths (30.8% lethality).
• Niger reported 62 cases and 6 deaths (9.7% lethality) with an alert in Bayo LGA, Borno State.
• Tchad reported 18 cases and 5 deaths (27.8% lethality) with an alert in Goundi district.
• Summary: Total cases reported were 252, with 37 deaths (14.7% overall lethality). Among NmA identified via PCR/Latex/Culture, data collection is encouraged for Benin and Niger.

II. Synthesis of Epidemiological Situation (Weeks 1-2, 2009)

• Benin: Total cases 22 (see 100%), deaths 5 (22.7% lethality).
• Burkina Faso: Total cases 228 (see 100%), deaths 32 (14.0% lethality).
• Cote d'Ivoire: Total cases 20 (see 92%), deaths 6 (30.0% lethality).
• Niger: Total cases 126 (see 100%), deaths 6 (4.8% lethality).
• Nigeria: Total cases 41 (5/0.9%), deaths 1 (2.4% lethality).

• Summary: Total cases from 11 countries for weeks 1-2 were 489, with 57 deaths (11.7% overall lethality). Only 62 LCR results were reported via PCR/Latex/Culture.
