2015 Mozambique Global School-based Student Health Survey (GSHS) Summary
Overview of the Survey
The 2015 Mozambique GSHS was a school-based survey targeting students in Classe 8-12, typically aged 13-17. It employed a two-stage cluster sampling design, where schools were selected with probability proportional to enrollment size, and then classes were randomly selected for participation. A total of 1,918 students participated in the survey, with a school response rate of 97%, student response rate of 83%, and an overall response rate of 80%. Students self-reported their responses on computer scanable answer sheets.

Alcohol Use
- Students aged 13-15 years: 9.6% (6.1-14.9%) currently drank alcohol, with 5.2% (2.6-9.9%) having ever been really drunk.

- Early alcohol use: Among students who had ever had a drink other than a few sips, 78.4% (64.8-87.7%) of 13-15 year olds and 46.2% (33.5-59.4%) of 16-17 year olds had their first drink before age 14.

- Students aged 13-15 years: 60.0% (47.8-71.0%) usually drank carbonated soft drinks one or more times per day.
- Students aged 16-17 years: 57.9% (50.2-65.2%) usually drank carbonated soft drinks one or more times per day.
- Overall (13-17 years): 59.1% (50.2-67.4%) usually drank carbonated soft drinks one or more times per day.
Drug Use
- Students aged 13-15 years: 0.8% (0.3-2.3%) ever used marijuana.
- Students aged 16-17 years: 1.8% (1.0-3.4%) ever used marijuana.
- Overall (13-17 years): 1.2% (0.7-2.2%) ever used marijuana.
- Early drug use: Data not available for students who used drugs before age 14.
Hygiene
- Students aged 13-15 years: 94.2% (90.2-96.7%) cleaned or brushed their teeth at least once per day.
- Students aged 16-17 years: 94.2% (91.4-96.1%) cleaned or brushed their teeth at least once per day.
- Overall (13-17 years): 94.3% (90.6-96.6%) cleaned or brushed their teeth at least once per day.
- Handwashing: 7.1% (4.5-11.1%) of 13-15 year olds and 4.1% (2.5-6.7%) of 16-17 year olds never or rarely washed their hands after using the toilet.
Mental Health
- Suicidal thoughts: 15.2% (10.9-20.8%) of 13-15 year olds and 16.8% (11.6-23.6%) of 16-17 year olds seriously considered attempting suicide in the past year.
- Suicidal attempts: 16.7% (12.7-21.5%) of 13-15 year olds and 17.6% (13.9-22.1%) of 16-17 year olds attempted suicide one or more times.
- Lack of close friends: 10.5% (6.9-15.7%) of 13-15 year olds and 9.7% (5.9-15.4%) of 16-17 year olds reported not having any close friends.
Physical Activity
- Students aged 13-15 years: 11.5% (6.5-19.7%) were physically active for at least 60 minutes per day on all 7 days.
- Students aged 16-17 years: 15.8% (11.1-22.2%) were physically active for at least 60 minutes per day on all 7 days.
- Overall (13-17 years): 13.3% (9.4-18.4%) were physically active for at least 60 minutes per day on all 7 days.
- Physical education attendance: 24.2% (16.2-34.5%) of 13-15 year olds and 17.6% (13.7-22.3%) of 16-17 year olds attended PE classes on three or more days per week.
Protective Factors
- School absenteeism: 22.2% (15.0-31.7%) of 13-15 year olds and 25.3% (20.1-31.2%) of 16-17 year olds missed classes or school without permission.
- Parental understanding: 49.9% (42.4-57.5%) of 13-15 year olds and 43.9% (34.7-53.5%) of 16-17 year olds reported that their parents or guardians understood their problems and worries.
- Parental awareness of free time: 43.2% (33.2-53.7%) of 13-15 year olds and 38.1% (33.0-43.5%) of 16-17 year olds reported that their parents or guardians knew what they were doing with their free time.
Sexual Behaviors
- Ever had sexual intercourse: 42.5% (32.4-53.2%) of 13-15 year olds and 63.9% (55.4-71.6%) of 16-17 year olds had ever had sexual intercourse.
- Early sexual initiation: 70.8% (58.8-80.5%) of 13-15 year olds and 31.1% (22.2-41.7%) of 16-17 year olds had their first sexual intercourse before age 14.
- Condom use: 72.7% (60.5-82.2%) of 13-15 year olds and 74.4% (67.0-80.7%) of 16-17 year olds used a condom during their last sexual intercourse.
Tobacco Use
- Current tobacco use: 5.2% (2.6-9.9%) of 13-15 year olds and 5.3% (2.9-9.5%) of 16-17 year olds used any tobacco products in the past 30 days.
- Current cigarette smoking: 2.1% (0.9-4.8%) of 13-15 year olds and 2.6% (1.4-4.6%) of 16-17 year olds smoked cigarettes in the past 30 days.
- Exposure to smoking: 52.3% (43.3-61.1%) of 13-15 year olds and 52.0% (44.8-59.1%) of 16-17 year olds reported that people smoked in their presence on one or more days during the past week.
Violence and Unintentional Injury
- Physical fights: 39.8% (34.0-45.9%) of 13-15 year olds and 30.3% (25.6-35.6%) of 16-17 year olds were involved in a physical fight in the past year.
- Serious injuries: 57.5% (47.3-67.1%) of 13-15 year olds and 54.0% (44.1-63.6%) of 16-17 year olds were seriously injured one or more times in the past year.
- Bullying: 45.0% (35.0-55.3%) of 13-15 year olds and 42.4% (36.3-48.8%) of 16-17 year olds reported being bullied on one or more days in the past 30 days.
