Digital Monitoring Technology and Air Quality: Summary
This study examines the impact of digital environmental monitoring technology on air quality in the People's Republic of China using government procurement data from 2014–2019. Key findings:
- The baseline results indicate that each additional environmental monitoring contract per 100,000 residents is associated with an average 8% reduction in PM2.5 levels.
- Digital monitoring technology improves regulatory enforcement by enhancing pollutant identification, leading to higher rates of compliance and the exit of heavily polluting firms.
- Increased transparency through information disclosure strengthens public awareness and encourages policymaker action.
- Green innovation is fostered through better regulation, and digital monitoring plays a crucial role in environmental governance.
- However, the effectiveness of these technologies is limited without appropriate policy integration and public engagement.
The findings suggest that while technology provides essential data for pollution control, broader systemic and policy-driven strategies are necessary for optimizing outcomes.
