I. Epidemiological Situation Week 25 (15-21 June 2009)

• Key Findings:
  • No districts reported as epidemic or alert this week.
  • Cumulative percentage completeness of notifications: 57.6%.
  • Countries: Benin had the highest lethality (25%) among districts, followed by Burkina Faso (35.3%) and Cameroun (33.3%).
  • Overall: 64 cases reported; 10 deaths (15.6% lethality). No meningococcal W135 cases (NmW135) linked to the epidemic alert.
• Notes: Laboratory data updates requested for silent countries (Central African Republic, Ethiopia, DR Congo, Togo).

II. Epidemiological Synthesis 2009 (Reported Weeks 01–25)

• Key Findings:
  • Total cases reported: 78,890; deaths: 4,243 (5.4% lethality).
  • Nigeria led in both cases (2,448) and deaths (44 in Burundi). Almost 9,480 cases were unreported (completeness: 74.1%).
  • Risk factors proportion: 4,243 cases in districts showing risk; 217 districts reported cases in the 2009 season.
• Findings: High underreporting (especially in Chad, Togo, Niger, Central African Republic, and Burkina Faso).

III. Pathogens Identification (PCR, Latex, Culture)

• Most cases confirmed by laboratory tests: Streptococcus pneumoniae (Neisseria meningitidis W135).
• PCR contamination issues: High in Niger (room temperature samples).
