Global School-based Student Health Survey: Argentina (Tucuman) 2012 Fact Sheet Summary

Methodology:

The survey was conducted on 1,445 students in grades 8th EGB, 9th EGB, and 1st Pol. in Tucuman, Argentina, in 2012.
Used a two-stage cluster sampling design with probability proportional to enrollment size and random class selection.
High response rates: 96% schools, 79% students, overall 76%.
Students aged 13-15 were analyzed. Data were self-reported and anonymized.

This survey assessed student health behaviors including alcohol consumption, diet, drug use, hygiene, mental health, physical activity, protective factors, sexual behaviors, tobacco use, and violence/unintentional injury.

Survey Results by Topic (Ages 13-15):

Alcohol Use:
- High prevalence of alcohol consumption in the past 30 days (43.4%).
- Similar first drink ages among ever-drinkers, with significant proportions drinking excessively or getting drunk.
- Boys and girls similar overall, though drinking became drunk showed higher rates for boys (27.4%) vs. girls (28.9%).
Dietary Behaviors:
- Very high rates of daily carbonated soft drink consumption (77.6%), suggesting low fruit/vegetable intake or diet soda use.
Drug Use:
- Very low marijuana use rates (4.0%).

Hygiene:
- Subpar tooth-brushing habits (less than once daily, 6.0%).

Mental Health:

Physical Activity:
- Only a fraction of students met recommended daily physical activity guidelines (26.6%). This was true for both boys (32.6%) and girls (21.1%), but significantly higher for girls in terms of not washing hands.
Protective Factors:
- Absenteeism without permission was common (37.6%).
- About half had supportive parents in terms of understanding problems (47.1%) and knowing free-time activities (48.6%), with girls showing better support on these points.
Sexual Behaviors:
- A considerable number (38.6%) had ever had sex, with lower rates in girls.
- Below half used condoms upon last sexual encounter.
- High rate of first sex before age 14 (50.0%).
Tobacco Use:
- Tobacco smoking was a significant issue (21.3% smoked past 30 days). High rates for boys (20.3%) and girls (22.0%).
- Early initiation of smoking was common (high percentage among ever-smokers tried before 14). Most (78+) saw daily smoking.
Violence and Unintentional Injury:
- Bullying was common (22.6%).
- A subset experienced physical fights and serious injuries.
