Ride-hailing: Expanding Women's Economic Opportunities in Brazil
Brazilian women face barriers to workforce participation due to transportation costs, time, and safety concerns. Ride-hailing platforms like Uber help overcome these by providing safe, reliable, and flexible options. A survey of 3,500 frequent riders found 63% women users, with safety cited most often by female users. Three major cities showed ride-hailing helps women balance work and family life, with approximately 280,000 to 390,000 more women projected to enter the workforce by 2029 if usage increases.
Safety features are crucial to female users. Among other reasons, longer commutes (89% spend over 30 minutes+) impact their time balance. These services offer autonomously scheduled travel for flexibility and increased independence as nearly half (49%) of women strongly agree they are more independent due to ride-hailing.
Economic impact includes increases in female workforce size (3.5-4.9%) and city GDP (BRl 47-65 billion). By enhancing mobility and reducing time/cost barriers, ride-hailing enhances job opportunities and women's economic participation, as shown in case studies like Victória's.
Policymakers should integrate ride-hailing into urban planning to maximize the service’s contribution to economic inclusion and gender equality.
