Monkeypox, COVID-19 & Other Global Health Issues - August 25, 2022 Virtual Press Conference Summary
-
Ukraine:
- The Russian invasion has severely impacted Ukraine's health system, though it has not collapsed. WHO supports restoration efforts.
- 1,300 tonnes of medical supplies delivered. Over 9,000 health workers trained. Mental health support provided due to war-related stress.
- Ongoing attacks on health facilities: 473 verified attacks, at least 98 deaths, 134 injuries. WHO urges Russia to end the war.
-
COVID-19:
- Global deaths exceeded one million for the year. WHO urges governments to strengthen vaccination, especially of at-risk groups (health workers, older people).
- COVAX Vaccine Delivery Partnership: 10 out of 34 low/IM dedicated countries have <10% coverage.
- Over one-third of the global population remains unvaccinated, including high proportions of health workers and older adults in low-income countries. WHO calls for tailored policies to limit transmission.
- Monkeypox was previously a technical lead focus, but space provided for it is limited. Technical details on variants and research are ongoing.
-
Monkeypox:
- Global cases fell >20% week-over-week, but increased in the Americas. Outbreak is shifting from Europe.
- Europe shows slowing transmission due to public health measures, behavioural change, and vaccination. Latin America faces insufficient awareness, weak measures, and lack of vaccine access.
- WHO welcomes vaccine deal for Latin America by Bavarian Nordic and aims to encourage vaccine effectiveness studies.
- WHO emphasizes ongoing public health measures and readiness (emergency committees, recommendations) for all regions as the outbreak continues to spread.
-
Monkeypox Blood Supply Risk:
- Donors are symptom-screened before donating blood. The viremia period (presence of virus in blood) for Monkeypox is very short, making blood transmission very unlikely.
-
Other Issues:
- Greater Horn of Africa: WHO has appealed for $124 million, with only 12% funded. Famine threat remains. Fighting resumed in Tigray, Ethiopia. Six million Tigrayans blocked by siege (food, medicine, telecom), a situation WHO calls completely unique and severe, demanding "unfettered access." WHO endorses co-chairing International Health Regulations (IHR).
- Sahel: Worst drought in 40 years. 33+ million in need. Outbreaks of cholera, yellow fever, measles, and vaccine-derived polio. $8.3m requested, far below needed $63+ million. WHO urges donors not to forget the Sahel.
- Democratic Republic of the Congo: Confirmed Ebola case. WHO supports response and has released guidelines for two highly effective Ebola therapeutics.
Speakers:
- Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus (WHO Director-General)
- Rosamund Lewis (Technical Lead for Monkeypox)
- Mike Ryan (Executive Director, Health Emergencies Programme)
- Kate O'Brien (Director, Immunisation, Vaccines and Biologicals)
- Maria Van Kerkhove (Technical Lead, COVID-19)
