Summary of BCG Report: Building the Supply Chain of the Future
Introduction: Companies face significant challenges in their supply chains, including upstream and downstream issues with external parties and unforeseen events, such as labor disruptions and demand surges. These challenges lead to operational inefficiencies, inventory problems, and customer dissatisfaction. Building a resilient and future-oriented supply chain is an ongoing process.
Key Challenges:
- Examples include raw material supplier shocks, unanticipated demand changes, and transportation capacity shortages.
- These disruptions cause delays, wasted production, low transportation utilization, and poor customer service.
Development Stages:
- Companies range from stagnating (limited digital transformation) to emerging (successful partial transformation), scaling (multiple digital waves), and future-built (continuous innovation).
- This progression is based on six key attributes: strategy/leadership, employee value proposition, tech/data platform, innovation culture, agility/resilience, and AI deployment.
Four Key Transformations:
- Digital & AI: Focus on embedding AI, modern tech platforms, and data ecosystems to enable smarter decision-making.
- Resilience: Achieve higher maturity through diversified footprints, flexible sourcing, and faster disruption response.
- Sustainability: Leverage AI and analytics to improve environmental tracking, reduce costs, and meet regulations and consumer expectations.
- Cost: Optimize through automation, flexible work models, and AI adoption to handle margin pressure.
Current State and AI Role:
- Most companies lag in supply chain capabilities; AI differentiates advanced organizations by enabling better risk prediction, cost optimization, and innovation.
- Supply chain leaders invest heavily in digitization and plan to outspend peers on AI-enabled use cases.
Case Study: A European steel company improved demand planning through scenario-based S&OP, digital twin, and agile teams, resulting in reduced inventory, higher EBITDA margins, and better customer service.
