Nature-based solutions (NBS) are emerging as crucial approaches to address the intertwined challenges of biodiversity loss and climate change in the Arab region. These solutions leverage natural ecosystems to generate synergistic benefits, such as carbon sequestration, habitat preservation, and adaptation measures like flood protection and soil stabilization. Global assessments identified priority areas for intervention based on biophysical characteristics, socioeconomic conditions, and climate risks. Key findings include the untapped potential of NBS to mitigate climate impacts while preserving biodiversity, with specific priority hotspots found in the Atlas Mountains, Nile Delta, Iraq's Mesopotamian floodplains, eastern Mediterranean mountains, Jordan River Valley, and coastal areas of the Arabian Peninsula. Each hotspot faces unique threats like desertification, water scarcity, and sea-level rise, necessitating tailored NBS interventions such as reforestation, agroforestry, dune stabilization, and wetland restoration. Recommendations emphasize localizing data, replicating successful models across the region, enhancing cross-sectoral collaboration, and using geospatial technologies for effective planning. Overall, the report underscores the importance of integrating NBS into national and regional strategies to achieve climate and biodiversity goals, co-benefits, and sustainable development.
