Background: Seasonal influenza circulates globally, causing significant acute infections and influenza-like illnesses; estimated up to one billion cases and up to 650,000 respiratory-related deaths annually. Its threat persists during the COVID-19 pandemic.
COVID-19 Influence: Reduced influenza cases were observed in 2020, likely due to COVID-19 public health measures. However, easing restrictions may lead to increased cases and potentially lower population immunity in 2021.
Coincidence: Influenza can circulate concurrently with COVID-19, and other respiratory viruses like RSV may also see changes.

Why Plan? Preparing for influenza seasons is needed due to potential rapid reintroduction and the impact of past low activity.

Measures: Continue good hand hygiene, respiratory etiquette, mask use, physical distancing. Vaccinate annually against influenza; prioritize specific risk groups (young children, pregnant women, older adults, those with underlying conditions, and healthcare workers). Co-administer COVID-19 and influenza vaccines.
Priority Groups: Young children, pregnant women, older persons, individuals with underlying health conditions, and healthcare workers.

Clinical Pathway: Evaluate patients for influenza-like symptoms upon health facility visit; test with rapid molecular assays or combine with COVID-19 tests; promote antivirals and oxygen for severe cases.
Preparation: Train health workers, ensure facilities are equipped, supply essential medicines and equipment, maintain structure (surge capacity/beds), and establish clear care pathways.

Detection: Differentiate from COVID-19 only via lab testing. Monitor disease surveillance continues despite the pandemic, contributing data to WHO's GISRS.
