Overview
This fact sheet summarizes the 2004 Global School-based Student Health Survey conducted in Region V of Chile. The survey targeted students in grades 7-primary, 8-primary, and 1-secondary, focusing on health behaviors and factors affecting students aged 13-15 years. A two-stage cluster sampling design was used, with a school response rate of 100% and a student response rate of 86%, involving 2,016 participants.
Key Findings
Alcohol and Other Drug Use
- About one in three students (31.2%) had consumed alcohol in the past 30 days.

- Low adherence to handwashing was observed; about 5-6% rarely washed hands before eating, and 1-2% rarely did so after using the toilet.
Mental Health
- Higher levels of loneliness and suicidal ideation were reported; 13-18% felt lonely, and 21-29% seriously considered suicide.
- Most students (over 90%) had close friends.
Physical Activity
- Only a small fraction (about 11-15%) met daily physical activity guidelines for all seven days in the past week.
- High rates of sedentary behavior were noted, with over 40% spending three or more hours daily on sitting activities like watching TV.
Protective Factors
- About 20% missed classes without permission.
- Perceptions of school kindness and parental awareness of free-time activities were mixed, with 25-35% reporting negative experiences.
Sexual Behaviours
- Some (about 15%) had ever had sexual intercourse, and a higher proportion (nearly 20%) among boys.
- If sexually active, 47% used a condom the last time, with varying rates by gender.
Tobacco Use
- Nearly one in three (28-34%) smoked cigarettes in the past 30 days.
- Some (4-5%) used other tobacco products, and passive smoking was common, with 82-86% exposed at home.
Unintentional Injuries and Violence
- High rates of fighting and injuries were reported; 35% were in physical fights.
- Bullying was prevalent, affecting 43-48% of students over 30 days.
