GYTS Mauritius 2016 Summary
GYTS Overview: The Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) is a standardized tool for monitoring youth tobacco use and supporting tobacco control efforts under the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control. Conducted in Mauritius in 2016 by the Ministry of Health and Quality of Life, it involved 4,141 students aged 13-15 years, with an 89.4% response rate.

Tobacco Use: Among students aged 13-15, 18.9% used any tobacco product, with higher rates among boys (28.2%) than girls (10.3%). Of these, 13.6% smoked cigarettes, frequently on 20+ days, and 8.4% used other tobacco products.

Electronic Cigarettes: 10.9% of students used electronic cigarettes, with a higher proportion among boys (17.9%).

Cessation: Over 60% of current smokers attempted to quit in the past 12 months, and more than 70% wanted to stop smoking now.

Secondhand Smoke: 29.4% of students were exposed to tobacco smoke at home, and 45.9% were exposed in enclosed public places.

Access and Availability: Among current cigarette smokers, 50.5% obtained cigarettes from stores. 57.5% were not prevented from buying them due to age.

Media: Most students (nearly 60%) noticed anti-tobacco messages in the media, but 18.4% saw tobacco advertisements or promotions at points of sale.

Knowledge and Attitudes: 59.1% of students believed tobacco smoking is harmful to others. 72.4% supported banning smoking inside enclosed public places. Significant majorities favored smoking restrictions in various settings and recognized the dangers of tobacco use.
