Chile - Concepcion Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) Summary
Methodology
The survey employed a two-stage cluster sampling design and targeted students aged 13-15 in grades 7, 8, and 9.
- School selection: Probability proportional to enrollment.
- Response rates: 100% school/100% class/89.6% student/89.6% overall, with 1,554 students participating out of 2003 data collection.
Prevalence
- Ever smoked cigarettes: 65.0% (Boys: 65.5%, Girls: 63.8%).

Key Determinants
The survey assesses components for a school-based tobacco control program, including:
- Access/availability: 11.1% smoke at home with usually buying from stores.
- Price: No age refusal reported (86.5% bought cigarettes).
- Secondhand Smoke (SHS):
- 50.0% live in homes where others smoke.
- 50.0% exposed to SHS in public/third places.
- Half think SHS is banned in public, and three-quarters believe smoking should be banned.
- Cessation: 50.6% of smokers want to quit; high attempts (61.8%) and help-seeking (68.3%).
- Media and Advertising:
- 79.3% saw anti-smoking media; 83.0% saw pro-cigarette billboard ads; nearly all (63.2%) saw pro-cigarette ads in print media.
- School Curriculum:
- Only around half were taught about smoking dangers, cessation, or discussed factors for their age.
- Parental Role: High parental smoking prevalence affects students (higher among smokers).
Knowledge and Attitudes
- Girls are more likely to believe smoking enhances social connections and attractiveness among peers.
- Attitudes supportive of tobacco control: 76.0% support public smoking bans.
- Beliefs on health: 61.4% think SHS is harmful, and four in ten want to quit.
