• Study Details: The Venezuela-Monagas Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) was a school-based survey conducted in 2003 among students aged 13-15, using a two-stage cluster sampling design. High response rates were achieved: 100% school, 100% class, and 91.6% student participation, with 1,001 students involved. The survey covered five determinants of tobacco use: access/availability and price, exposure to secondhand smoke (SHS), cessation, media and advertising, and school curriculum.

• Prevalence of Tobacco Use: 11.0% of students had ever smoked cigarettes, with boys at 12.4% and girls at 9.4%. Currently, 10.5% used any tobacco product, 4.7% smoked cigarettes, and 7.0% used other tobacco products. Among never smokers, 13.8% were likely to initiate smoking the following year.

• Exposure to Secondhand Smoke: High SHS exposure was reported, with 39.3% living in homes where others smoked, and 45.4% exposed in other settings like public places. Most students (88.0%) supported banning smoking in public areas, and 62.7% believed SHS is harmful.

• Access and Availability: A significant portion (27.1%) smoked at home, and 40.4% bought cigarettes from stores. About one in eight students (9.1%) had objects with cigarette brand logos, and 8.2% were offered free cigarettes by representatives.

• Media and Advertising: Students were frequently exposed to media messages, with 79.7% seeing anti-smoking ads and 72.1-69.9% seeing pro-cigarette ads in various forms. However, one in eight had brand-logo objects, and nearly one in ten were offered tobacco products.

• School-Based Education: Curricula included lessons on tobacco dangers (39.5%) and discussions on reasons for smoking (24.3%), but overall knowledge and attitudes remain a concern despite these efforts.
