Saudi Arabia Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) Summary
Overview
This document summarizes the Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) conducted in Saudi Arabia in 2007, focusing on tobacco use among adolescents aged 13–15. The survey employed a two-stage cluster sampling design with high response rates, revealing key data on prevalence, determinants, and youth attitudes toward tobacco.
Key Findings: Prevalence
- 26.1% of students (35.8% male, 16.1% female) had ever smoked cigarettes.
- 15.9% of students (20.2% male, 10.7% female) currently used any tobacco product.
- 6.7% currently smoked cigarettes (10.2% male, 2.6% female).
- 11.9% used other tobacco products (13.3% male, 9.4% female).
- 19.2% of never-smokers were likely to initiate smoking next year.
Highlights: Determinants
- Access and Availability: 47.6% bought cigarettes in stores without refusal; 24.3% had one or more parents who smoked.
- Exposure to Secondhand Smoke (SHS):
- 27.9% lived in homes where others smoked in their presence.
- 73.2% believed smoking should be banned from public places; 62.7% thought SHS was harmful to them.
- Over one-quarter had parents who smoked, and 79.5% believed public smoking bans should be enforced.
- Cessation and Media:
- 71.7% of current smokers wanted to quit; 62.3% tried to stop in the past year.
- Only 78.5% had received help to quit.
- Media perceptions: 61.8% saw anti-smoking messages, but 60% of students viewed pro-cigarette ads (e.g., on billboards and in newspapers).
- Knowledge and Attitudes:
- 31.8% thought smoking made boys more attractive, and similar perceptions existed for girls.
- 58.8% learned about smoking dangers in school, and 43.6% were taught about tobacco effects.
Sampling Methodology
- A two-stage cluster sample included 94.0% school response rate, 100% class response rate, and an overall 82.1% student response rate, with 2,574 participants.
