Influenza at the Human-Animal Interface: Summary and Assessment (7 November 2011)
1. Human Infections with Avian Influenza H5N1 Virus
- Overall Situation (Up to 7 November 2011): 569 confirmed human cases from 15 countries, 334 fatalities (Case Fatality Ratio: 58.7%).
- 2011 Cases: 53 human cases reported from Bangladesh, Cambodia, Egypt, and Indonesia. Four were reported since 7 October 2011: one in Egypt (fully recovered) and three in Indonesia (all died).
- Epidemiology: H5N1 persists in poultry across multiple regions, including Egypt and Indonesia (officially declared endemic) and China, India, and Viet Nam (FAO suggests endemic circulation). Limited evidence of human-to-human transmission; no community-level spread.
- Transmission Risk: Continuous exposure risk in endemic poultry areas leading to sporadic human cases, which are expected to persist as long as the virus circulates mainly in household poultry. These are not considered "unusual."
- Additional Resources: WHO/OIE/FAO avian influenza pages.
2. Human Infections with Other Animal Influenza Viruses: (Reported over the past 3 months)
- Swine-Origin Influenza (H3N2): 7 cases reported from USA. All recovered. No evidence of sustained human-to-human transmission, though some cases shared agricultural event attendance. WHO has designated a vaccine seed virus based on one isolate.
