ADBI established in 1997 to support capacity building and development policy analysis in the Asia-Pacific region. Early work focused on responding to the Asian Financial Crisis, promoting regional integration, and addressing poverty. Post-crisis priorities included inclusive growth, climate change mitigation, and green infrastructure. Collaborations with think tanks, universities and international partners, including the successful hosting of the G20's Think20 process under Japan's 2019 presidency, have enhanced regional dialogue and policy recommendations.

Research priorities have evolved to match regional needs, including infrastructure investment, small and medium-sized enterprise finance, financial literacy, and COVID-19 policy impacts. Methodologies have also advanced, incorporating fieldwork, randomized controlled trials, and primary data collection to strengthen evidence-based policy advice. The institute has produced influential knowledge products like the Infrastructure for a Seamless Asia report and publications on green finance and fintech.

Capacity building and training programs, including e-learning courses and regional workshops, have equipped policymakers, civil servants, and practitioners to implement regional initiatives like infrastructure development and social safety nets. Financial literacy and digitalization are increasingly key areas for designing inclusive policies.

ADBI's outreach increased significantly, leveraging digital tools, social media, webinars, and by publishing accessible resources. Skill in using partnerships and digitalization has expanded the reach of its knowledge products, attracting over 40,000 participants in capacity building activities and significantly growing its online footprint. Future directions include deepening collaboration for climate action, sustainable finance and enhancing the scalability of policy reforms post-pandemic.
