Overview

The Saint Lucia Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) is a school-based study conducted in 2011, focusing on tobacco use and its determinants among ages 13-15. A total of 858 students participated, with a response rate of 75.1%.

Key Findings

Tobacco Use Prevalence:
- 32.5% reported ever smoking cigarettes (male-only: 41.4%, female-only: 24.6%).
- 20.7% currently use any tobacco product (males: 24.5%, females: 17.3%).
- 10.7% currently smoke cigarettes (males: 13.3%, females: 8.5%).
- 13.4% currently use other tobacco products.
- Over 19% of never-smokers intend to initiate smoking in the next year.

Determinants of Tobacco Use

Access/Availability:
- 40.5% smoke cigarettes at home.
- 12.0% buy cigarettes in stores.
- 6.7% have cigarette brand logos.
Secondhand Smoke (SHS) Exposure:
- 30.5% live in homes with smoking others.
- 33.8% are exposed in enclosed public places.
- 23.5% report parents who smoke.
- Most youth think SHS is harmful, and support bans in public.
Media and Advertising:
- 53.9% saw anti-smoking media in 30 days, but 38.5% saw pro-tobacco messages on billboards or ads in outlets.
School Factors:
- 54.6% have been taught about smoking dangers, and 34.6% discussed reasons for smoking at school.
