Human Influenza at the Human-Animal Interface
As of 13 November 2015, there have been no new laboratory-confirmed human cases of avian influenza A(H5N1) virus reported to WHO since 15 October 2015. The total number of laboratory-confirmed human cases of avian influenza A(H5N1) infection reported to WHO from 16 countries between 2003 and November 2015 is 844, with 449 fatalities. Various H5 subtypes, including H5N1, H5N2, and H5N6, continue to be detected in birds in Africa and Asia. Notably, H5N1 and four H5N6 cases were reported in China since 2014. The overall public health risk assessment for avian influenza A(H5) viruses remains unchanged since July 2015.
Human infections with avian influenza A(H7N9) viruses have seen two new cases reported since the last update on 15 October 2015 from China. The cumulative cases reported to WHO as of November 2015 total 681, with at least 275 deaths. The virus persists in poultry populations in multiple Chinese provinces, and if current trends continue, the number of human cases may increase in affected and neighboring areas. The overall public health risk assessment for avian influenza A(H7N9) viruses has not changed since February 2015.
WHO recommends ongoing global surveillance for influenza viruses, with emphasis on characterizing and reporting viruses from animals and humans. Human infections with non-seasonal influenza viruses are reportable under the IHR (2005). For the most updated information, refer to the provided links.
