Summary of Human Infection with Avian Influenza at Human-Animal Interface (as of 20 January 2016)

Human infection with avian influenza A(H5) viruses: Between 14 December 2015 and 20 January 2016, two new laboratory-confirmed cases were reported: one from Bangladesh (60-year-old male with severe acute respiratory infection, fully recovered) and one from China (42-year-old male critically ill after poultry exposure). Since 2003, there have been 846 confirmed cases from 16 countries, with 449 deaths. Additionally, five H5N6 cases were reported from China, all sporadic with no community transmission. The overall public health risk assessment remains unchanged since July 2015.

Human infection with avian influenza A(H7N9) viruses: From 18 December 2015 to 20 January 2016, ten new cases were reported in China (all with live or slaughtered poultry exposure). Total cases from China: 693 laboratory-confirmed infections since unspecified start date, with at least 277 deaths. The public health risk assessment has not changed since February 2015.

Human infection with influenza A(H3N2v) virus: A single case was reported in the USA from New Jersey (infection with influenza A(H3N2v), fully recovered after visiting an area with swine; no human-to-human transmission. The public health risk is considered low.

Human infection with avian influenza A(H9N2) virus: One case from Bangladesh (46-year-old male poultry worker, recovered after illness onset with possible poultry exposure; no further transmission detected). Risk is low, and it can occur sporadically in regions with poultry circulation. Human infections remain infrequent and generally mild, with no change in public health risk assessment for related subtypes.
