Meningitis Weekly Bulletin Summary (Week 25, 2013)
- Epidemiological Data for Week 25: This week reported a total of 388 suspected meningitis cases across multiple countries in West Africa. Cases by country include: Benin (8), Burkina Faso (24), Cameroon (20), Côte d'Ivoire (3), Ghana (3), Guinea (1), Gambia (5), Mali (5), Niger (7), Nigeria (0), RD Congo (266), Senegal (11), South Sudan (5), Sudan (22), Chad (7), and Togo (1). Deaths: 33 (8.5% lethality). One district in Chad (Goundi) is in alert phase with an attack rate of 5.3.
- Cumulative Data (Weeks 01-25): Over the period, 12,183 cases were reported with 1,111 deaths (9.1% lethality). Countries with vaccination status noted include partially vaccinated countries (e.g., Benin), entirely vaccinated countries (e.g., Burkina Faso).
- Laboratory Data by Country: Pathogens identified include Neisseria meningitidis serogroup B (NmB) and Streptococcus pneumoniae (Spn), listed in Table 3. Cumulative pathogen samples: 3,057 CSFs collected from lab-confirmed cases.
