Copper Regional Focus: Latin America Summary

Executive Summary

Goal: Latin American ICA members aim for net-zero Scope 1 (direct emissions) and Scope 2 (indirect electricity) emissions by 2050 through decarbonization pathways.

Current State: Latin American copper production emitted 35.2 Mt CO₂e in 2018 (86% from mining, 31% Scope 3). By 2050, no-action scenario predicts significant emissions growth, with Scope 3 increasing due to production growth.

Scope

Methodology: Based on 'CopperThe Pathway to Net Zero', using 2018 emissions data (Fraunhofer Institute/Quantis) and archetypes for production processes. Abatement levers analyzed: decarbonized electricity, alternative fuels, equipment electri�cation, and energy e�ciency.

Decarbonization Pathways & Abatement Levers:

1. Decarbonized Electricity: Primary lever by 2030 (PPAs, solar farms). In 2040, it remains key alongside alternative fuels.
2. Alternative Fuels: Viable for smelters, especially with green hydrogen improvements.
3. Equipment Electri�cation: Primarily for trucks (battery-electric), limited battery availability.
4. Energy E�ciency: Secondary but growing role.

Scope 3 Emissions

Challenges: Not solely controllable by copper producers; requires partnerships with suppliers and customers. Current initiatives include Huella Chile.

Investment & Enabling Conditions:

• Investment Needed: ~$42 billion by 2050 for decarbonization (24% of total capex).
• Enabling Factors: Competitive decarbonized electricity prices, regulatory incentives, access to abatement technologies, skilled workforce development and recycling capacity.

Way Forward

ICA Latin America commits to:

• Measuring carbon footprint with a common methodology (by end-2024).
• Decarbonizing production responsibly, advancing community and environmental support (Copper Mark).
• Collaborative decarbonization efforts with policymakers, civil society, academia.
