H1 2017 VC Fintech Investment Landscape Summary
Global Overview
In the first half of 2017, the global Fintech VC investment landscape saw 787 deals raising a total of $6.5BN, marking a 45% decrease YoY. The United States led in both deal value and volume, raising $3.3BN through 357 deals, a 7.7% increase in deal value from H1 2016 but an 18.5% decrease in deal volume. China, which was the top recipient in 2016, dropped to second place with $1.0BN in investment, a 86% decrease YoY.
Excluding China's three "mega-rounds" (Alipay, Lufax.com, and JD Finance), global investment increased by 28.4% compared to H1 2016. SoFi, an online personal finance company in the United States, raised the largest single round at $453M. The most active global investors were 500 Startups, Startupbootcamp, and Y Combinator, each making 17 investments.
UK Overview
The UK attracted $564M of VC investment in H1 2017, a 37% increase YoY. It ranked third globally in total investment and second in deal volume with 102 deals. The top three sectors were:
- Alternative Lending / Financing (28%)
- Challenger Banks (25%)
- Personal Finance / Wealth Management (13%)
The top 5 UK deals ranged from $25M to $102M in investment, with Atom Bank, Funding Circle, Zopa, Monzo, and Currency Cloud leading the pack. Atom Bank and Funding Circle also made it into the global top 20 deals. Out of the top 20 UK deals, 7 were Innovate Finance members.
The UK received 54% of its investment from non-domiciled VCs, primarily from North America (33%). This highlights the growing international interest in the UK's Fintech sector.
