Summary of Accenture Report: "Youthquake Meets Green Economy"
Young people in the Asia Pacific region increasingly seek employment in the green economy alongside traditional job preferences like good pay and stability. Approximately 77% of young APAC respondents (ages 15-39) aspire to work in green jobs within the next decade, with 73% confident of achieving this goal. By 2030, it is estimated that 32.6 million green jobs will emerge in countries like Australia, China, India, Indonesia, and Japan, but this may not fully address the potential demand from nearly 665 million young people in the region.
Key imperatives for businesses include transforming their strategies by creating genuine green opportunities, designing innovative "green collar" jobs, and integrating sustainability across all operations. Examples such as bio-polymer engineers and vertical farming illustrate emerging roles driven by innovation. Companies are encouraged to foster internal hubs for sustainability, retrain talent, and partner with educational institutions to build skills in areas like renewable energy and low-carbon technologies.
Despite strong youth interest in pay and stability, green jobs must be perceived as desirable and realistic. Research shows that specialized training is highly sought after, with many young people willing to reskill. For instance, companies like L&T have established training programs to prepare workers for green roles.
The report concludes that embracing the green economy is not only essential for environmental goals but also a key strategy to attract talent and ensure long-term success, as businesses must adapt to decarbonization and innovation by 2030. Further action includes setting ambitious targets and avoiding "greenwashing," focusing on tangible environmental impacts.
