Macau SAR GYTS Summary
Methodology
The Global Youth Tobacco Survey in Macau Special Administrative Region (2010) used a two-stage cluster sample design with a 88.7% response rate from 1,064 students aged 13-15. Data collected included prevalence of cigarette and tobacco use, access/availability, exposure to secondhand smoke (SHS), cessation, media and advertising, and school curriculum determinants.
Tobacco Use Prevalence
- 28.1% of students had ever smoked cigarettes (Boys: 26.1%, Girls: 30.1%).
- 9.5% currently use any tobacco product (Boys: 8.2%, Girls: 10.9%).
- 5.7% currently smoke cigarettes (Boys: 4.4%, Girls: 7.1%).
- 4.3% currently use other tobacco products (Boys: 4.4%, Girls: 4.1%).
Initiation and Attitudes
- 15.2% of students who never smoked were likely to initiate smoking in the next year.
- Media exposure: 88.1% viewed anti-smoking messages in the past 30 days, while 5.8% saw pro-cigarette ads and 43.2% saw them in newspapers or magazines.
Secondhand Smoke Exposure
- 39.4% live in households where others smoke.
- 64.0% are exposed to smoke outside the home.
- 80.5% believe SHS is harmful to others.
- 49.5% have at least one parent who smokes.
Cessation Behaviors
- 56.6% of current tobacco users want to stop smoking.
- 66.5% attempted to quit in the past year.
- 29.3% have received help to stop.
Access and Availability
- Most students (57.8%) buy cigarettes from stores, and 17.2% smoke at home.
- 5.3% have objects with cigarette brand logos in the past 30 days.
- 3.1% were offered free cigarettes by tobacco company representatives.
School Factors
- 60.8% learned about smoking dangers in school.
- 28.5% discussed why peers smoke.
- 63.1% learned about effects of tobacco use.
Key determinant findings highlight areas where Macau SAR can strengthen tobacco control programs, such as improving school curricula, reducing SHS exposure, and addressing media influences.
