Summary of Variant1 Influenza A(H1) Candidate Vaccine Viruses Status
This document summarizes the status of candidate vaccine viruses for variant1 influenza A(H1), based on the WHO Collaborating Centres in the Global Influenza Surveillance and Response System (GISRS), dated 23 February 2024.
Antigenic and genetic analyses are performed by WHO CCs to ensure candidate vaccine viruses meet standards and have passed necessary safety tests, including two-way haemagglutination inhibition (HI) testing. Approval for vaccine composition and formulation is a national or regional responsibility. All candidate vaccine viruses listed are safe for handling under BSL-2 enhanced containment conditions.
Currently Available Candidate Viruses
- A/Ohio/24/2017 (H1N2)v: Developed via reverse genetics by CDC, USA.
- A/Ohio/9/2015 (H1N1)v: Developed via reverse genetics by CDC, USA.
- A/Hunan/42443/2015 (H1N1)v: Conventional reassortant developed by CCDC, China.
- A/Michigan/383/2018 (H1N2)v: Developed via reverse genetics by CDC, USA.
Candidate Viruses In Preparation
- Several influenza A(H1) viruses are pending approval from authorities such as MHRA, UK or CDC, USA, including:
- A/Catalonia/NSAV198289092/2023 (H1N1)v
- A/England/234600203/2023 (H1N2)v
- Other strains like A/California/71/2021 (H1N2)v and others via techniques like reverse genetics or conventional reassortant.
