The 2021 Extra Joint FAO/WHO Meeting on Pesticide Residues was conducted virtually from May 17–21 and June 7–11 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It evaluated 29 pesticides and estimated 237 maximum residue levels (MRLs), supervised trials median residue (STMR), and highest residue (HR) levels, providing recommendations for Codex standards.

Key outcomes included:

• Acess of acceptable daily intakes (ADIs) and acute reference doses (ARfDs) for pesticides like Acetamiprid, Bixafen, and Clofentezine.
• Residue definitions for compliance and dietary risk assessment for various commodities, such as tree nuts, barley, soybeans, and others.
• Notable withdrawals or adjustments, including recommendations for Acetamiprid in certain tree nuts.

General considerations on the virtual format:

• Benefits: Increased accessibility for experts unable to attend in person.
• Challenges: Difficulties with time zones, reduced effectiveness of in-depth discussions, and technical requirements.
• Overall: Virtual meetings can partially substitute for in-person interactions but are less efficient for complex evaluations. Face-to-face meetings are recommended for robust scientific discussions and periodic reviews.

No new recommendations were issued for Chlorpyrifos, Cypermethrins, or Spiromesifen. The meeting aimed to avoid a backlog by using online video-conferencing, with five subgroups formed for pre-meeting work.
