Global School-based Student Health Survey: Guatemala 2009 Summary
Overview
The 2009 Guatemala Global School-based Student Health Survey (GSHS) monitored health behaviors in students aged 13-15 using a school-based, two-stage cluster sampling design. Data were self-reported via computer, with a school response rate of 94%, student response rate of 86%, and overall response rate of 81%, involving 5592 participants. The survey focused on alcohol use, dietary behaviors, hygiene, mental health, physical activity, and sexual behaviors to assess youth health risks.
Key Findings

Approximately 16.2% of students drank alcohol on one or more days in the past 30 days. Among those who drank, 72.3% consumed their first drink before age 14. About 10.9% admitted to being drunk multiple times in their lifetime.
Dietary Behaviors
- 27.1% were overweight, and 7.5% were obese.
- 54.8% consumed carbonated soft drinks daily during the past 30 days.
- 1.1% were underweight.
Hygiene
- Only 4.0% cleaned or brushed teeth less than once daily, with poor handwashing reported by 3.6% (rarely or never after using the toilet).
Mental Health
- 13.8% seriously considered suicide, and 13.5% attempted it in the past 12 months.
- 5.8% reported having no close friends.
Physical Activity
- Only 24.1% engaged in at least 60 minutes of physical activity daily on five or more days.
- 29.1% attended physical education classes three or more days per week.
- 25.4% spent three or more hours daily on sitting activities.
Sexual Behaviors
- 12.7% had ever engaged in sexual intercourse by age 15.
- Among those who did, 58.2% had first sex before age 14.
- 57.5% used a condom on their last sexual encounter.
The survey highlights prevalent issues in adolescent health, including substance use, poor diet, hygiene deficiencies, mental health concerns, low physical activity, and early sexual onset with inconsistent protection.
