Survey Overview
The 2005 Global School-based Student Health Survey (GSHS) for UAE Northern Emir Govt targeted students in grades 7 to 10 (aged 13-15), using a two-stage cluster sampling design to represent the population. High response rates were achieved: 96% school response, 93% student response, and 89% overall, with 1,877 participants.

Dietary Behaviours and Overweight: About 10.6% of students felt hungry often due to insufficient food; overweight rates were 32.9%, obesity rates were 14.9%, with no significant gender differences in some cases.

Hygiene: 26.3% brushed teeth less than once daily; 6.9% never or rarely washed hands before eating, and 4.6% rarely washed after using the toilet, showing higher male and female variances.

Mental Health: Roughly 19.1% felt lonely, 13.4% considered suicide, and 6.5% had no close friends, with slight variations by gender.

Physical Activity: Only 16% met daily physical activity guidelines, while 36.2% spent significant time in sedentary activities, with boys more active and girls less so.

Protective Factors: 30.0% missed school without permission; perceptions of school kindness were low, with girls showing less favorable views; 26.0% said parents rarely knew their free time activities.

Tobacco Use: 7.5% smoked cigarettes in the past month, and 8.9% used other tobacco products, with higher rates among boys.

Unintentional Injuries and Violence: High levels of violence: 32.7% experienced physical attacks, 42.7% in fights, and 21.7% bullied, with boys disproportionately affected.
