报告摘要
Internal migration, particularly the outflow of high-skilled individuals, is positively correlated with the shift from sharecropping to fixed rent contracts in agricultural land rental markets in India. This transition is driven by landlords migrating to urban areas, which increases the prevalence of fixed rent arrangements and contract formalization. The findings suggest that migration enhances agricultural efficiency by reducing moral hazard and risk-sharing inefficiencies associated with sharecropping. Additionally, migration contributes to longer contracts and reduced reliance on familial tenancy, potentially improving market efficiency and equity. The results highlight a previously under-studied linkage between labor and land markets, with significant implications for rural development policies in developing countries.
