报告摘要
India Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) 2006 Summary
-
Survey Details: Conducted in 2006 among students aged 13-15 in grades 8, 9, and 10 in India. Used a two-stage cluster sampling design with a high response rate (student response rate 82.3%, overall 81.8%), involving 11,789 participants.
-
Key Findings on Tobacco Prevalence: 13.7% of students currently use any tobacco product, with higher rates among boys (16.8%) than girls (9.4%). Specifically, 3.8% smoke cigarettes (5.4% boys, 1.6% girls), and 11.9% use other tobacco products (14.3% boys, 8.5% girls). Additionally, 15.1% of never-smokers are likely to initiate smoking.
-
Exposure to Secondhand Smoke (SHS): A high percentage of students are exposed to SHS, with 26.6% living in homes where others smoke in their presence and 40.3% exposed outside the home. Over one-quarter of students live in smoke-exposed environments.
-
Knowledge and Attitudes: 67.9% believe smoking is harmful, and 70.3% want to stop smoking. 74.0% support banning smoking in public places. For cessation, 81.8% have received help to quit, and 55.5% have attempted to stop.
-
Media and School Factors: 74.0% were exposed to anti-smoking media in the past 30 days, and 71.6% saw pro-cigarette ads. In schools, 54.5% learned about smoking dangers in class, and media and advertisement also influenced perceptions.
This survey highlights high tobacco use prevalence among youth, driven by SHS exposure, advertising, and educational gaps, suggesting needs for comprehensive tobacco control programs.
