Exporting and Technology Adoption in Brazil
This study analyzes the impact of exporting on firms' adoption of advanced technologies in Brazil, addressing endogeneity concerns through a quasi-experimental approach.
A novel dataset combining firm-level technology adoption surveys with longitudinal export data and employer-employee statistics enables the analysis. Using a difference-in-differences estimator with multiple periods and a staggered treatment timing design, the research identifies the causal effect of entering export markets on technology sophistication across different business functions.
Key findings indicate that exporting significantly increases firms' likelihood of adopting sophisticated technologies related to business administration (ERP), production planning, supply chain management, and quality control. The effects are statistically significant, with Business Administration showing a 13.7% higher propensity to adopt advanced technologies among exporters.
The results support models in which exporting increases operational complexity, driving demand for better management technologies. No anticipation effects (preparation for export) were detected. The adoption effects persist over time, suggesting long-term impacts on technology upgrading.
Further policy discussions could explore channels such as knowledge transfer through international buyers or competition in global markets to incentivize technology upgrading.
