I. Epidemiological Situation (Week 18)

During week 18 of 2024, 19 countries reported 14,400 suspected meningitis cases and 806 deaths, with a case fatality rate (CFR) of 5.6%. Countries included Angola, Benin, Burkina Faso, and others. In Niger, Mali, Nigeria, Senegal, and Chad, three districts exceeded epidemic thresholds (e.g., Agadez in Niger with high attack rates) and eight districts triggered alert levels. Other countries showed lower or zero cases for this week.

II. Cumulative Situation (Weeks 01-18, 2024)

From weeks 01 to 18, 24 countries reported 14,400 suspected cases and 806 deaths. Countries like Nigeria, Central African Republic, and Ethiopia had high incidence rates, with 33 districts/sub-districts surpassing epidemic thresholds. The serogroup A meningitis case was undetected since 2017 due to vaccination efforts.

III. Laboratory Data

Sixteen countries shared lab data from 5,340 samples, with 1,420 positive for meningitis. The main pathogens identified were Neisseria meningitidis serogroup C (40.2%), W (29.1%), Streptococcus pneumoniae (21.3%), and others. Recommendations include enhancing genomic surveillance and lab capacity.

IV. Recommendations

• Improve surveillance integration, increase lumbar puncture rates, and strengthen regional sample transportation.
• Continue vaccination efforts with MenAfriVac, pre-positioning vaccines in at-risk areas.
• Enhance lab infrastructure, including RT-PCR setup, and support quality control for meningitis outbreaks.
• Countries should prepare for alerts by December 2023 and respond quickly to epidemic thresholds.
