Asia's Transition to Net Zero in Agriculture
Asia faces significant challenges in transitioning to net-zero agriculture due to its reliance on the sector for livelihoods and food security, yet it is a major contributor to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, accounting for up to 40% in some economies. The region's agricultural emissions stem primarily from rice cultivation, livestock production, synthetic fertilizers, and land-use changes. Key opportunities for reduction include alternative wetting and drying, bioenergy, and natural climate solutions, which show high cost-effectiveness. However, this transition requires overcoming institutional, policy, and economic barriers, such as limited climate finance, trade-related emissions, and barriers to implementing mitigation technologies.
Priority areas for action include strengthening economic policies, leveraging regional collaboration, and investing in low-cost, scalable technologies. Achieving net zero will need innovative financing, better data, and harmonized policies to ensure equitable and resilient outcomes while safeguarding food systems and biodiversity.
