I. Epidemiological Situation
- Countries reported: Benin, Burkina Faso, Cote d'Ivoire, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Togo
- Total cases: 1,775 cases
- Total deaths: 142 deaths (8.0% overall lethality)
- Most affected districts/regions:
- Burkina Faso: 5 epidemic districts (Barsalgho, Gourcy, Houndé, Sig-Noghin, Titao) and 14 alert districts
- Mali: 3 epidemic weeks and 2 alert districts
- Nigeria: 14 LGAs in epidemic phase
- Togo: 14 weeks in epidemic phase/weeks notified
II. Cumulative Data (Weeks Notified 01-14 2008)
- Most affected countries: Burkina Faso (7184 cases, 17 epidemic districts) and Nigeria (2711 cases, 28 epidemic districts)
- Need for updated data: Central African Republic, Chad, DRC
- Silent country: Cameroon
- Case Fatality Rate (CFR): Burkina Faso (9.9%), Cote d'Ivoire (16.2%), Niger (5.7%), Nigeria (9.0%)
III. Laboratory Results
- Meningococcus group A (NmA): Dominant pathogen (Burkina Faso: 94 samples, Niger: 497 samples)
- Testing limitations: Very few samples tested, except Niger
IV. Cartographical Representation
- Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, and Togo show high attack rates
